First in the Family
A college preparation guide for
parents who did not attend college.

One Final Financial Aid Thought...

Today, a college education can cost a student and family as much as $100,000 or more. Despite that high price, families seem to believe the cost must be covered completely during the four years the student attends college. Consider that the same families think nothing of financing a $25,000 car over five or six years, or a $150,000 home over thirty years. Research has consistently shown that a college education significantly increases a person's lifetime earnings. In addition, those with a college education are happier, contribute more to their communities, and are more politically involved. The jury is still out concerning the relative value of an Ivy-league education versus a state-school, but families should understand that the "sticker shock" associated with a college education should be tempered with an understanding of its long-term value.
