Music Lessons
for Children

A Guide for Parents
by Elaine Bergstresser

What should we look for in a teacher?

Talk to other parents or to music teachers in your local school district. Whom do they recommend? The concertmaster of the symphony orchestra in the nearest city is not necessarily the best teacher for your beginner. Below are some questions to consider when shopping for a private music teacher:

§ Does the teacher work well with young children? How can you be sure? Talk to parents of children who are already studying with that individual. Speak with the some of his or her current students, too, to get their perspective.

§ How much teaching experience does he or she have? This can be an important factor. But don't rule out a musically gifted high school or college student who is willing to work with beginners.

§ Does the teacher have a history of longevity with students? This is often the sign of an effective teacher who builds a strong rapport with young people. The one-on-one relationship between a teacher and student in the study of music is very significant and should be positive, encouraging, and mutually enriching.

§ What are the teacher's policies for payment and missed lessons due to vacation or illness?

§ What practice expectations does the teacher have? You certainly want a teacher who sets high expectations, but they must be reasonable for a beginner.

§ Does the teacher emphasize ensemble playing? Does he or she play along with students or structure events that allow students to play with one another? Music making is often not a solitary affair. Learning how to play with others using simple duets or trios is an indispensable skill, even for beginners.
