Music Lessons
for Children

A Guide for Parents
by Elaine Bergstresser

How much should I interfere in lessons and practice?

It's a good idea to attend the music lessons with your child - especially in the very beginning. Most teachers are very open to parents who express that kind of interest. Listen closely to the instruction. You may be able to address questions your child will have during practice sessions at home, eliminating much frustration.

But, as your child practices at home, don't try to fix every mistake. Part of learning the art of music is learning some "self-correcting" skills. Step in if you sense that your child is not addressing a recurrent mistake, but allow him some time to correct his own errors.
