Is your child’s school one needing improvement?

Results of state testing are public; if you have not received information about the status of your child’s school, call the principal’s office or school board and ask for a report. If the school is on the list needing improvement, ask what problems were identified and what plans are in place to address these issues. One common consequence is for schools to reallocate their budgets to focus on those students who failed to make AYP and on teacher training to address their needs. Sometimes this means taking money away from other programs. Some schools are faced with the loss of art and music or gifted education options in order to fund more tutoring and teacher training. NCLB provides funding for many new resources, but these resources must be directed at school improvements to increase AYP.
