How to Help Children and Teens
During Tough Economic Times

Introduction

For children, experiencing tough economic times can be as distant as a television news story or as close as an unemployed parent or leaving the home they know. Adults who are themselves dealing with the crisis may not be able to read their children’s worry or stress. As the economic crisis deepens, every parent, teacher, and adult who works with children and teens needs to be aware of the possible impact of such a crisis on children of all ages. TeachersFirst and TeachersAndFamilies offer this article and accompanying ideas for school and family to help children and teens understand and cope during tough economic times. Thank you to the National Association of School Psychologists for their permission to reprint and adapt portions of their free, downloadable article, Helping Children Cope in Unsettling Times: The Economic Crisis; Tips for Parents and Teachers. Our full list of other sources is available at the conclusion of this article.
